Paardenmarkt 68: A Historic Landmark Reborn – Bridging Heritage and Innovation

Paardenmarkt 68, a historic gem in Antwerp, has undergone a remarkable transformation, intertwining its rich past with a vibrant present and a promising future.

This evolution has been significantly influenced by the strategic involvement of Vanbelle Law Boutique and VB Alliance, who have played pivotal roles in preserving its heritage while steering it towards modern relevance. Meaning that in addition to Brussels, Vanbelle Law Boutique, proud founder of VB Alliance, is now also present in Antwerp.

A Glimpse into History

Constructed between 1753 and 1754, Paardenmarkt 68, also known as Hotel Kums, stands as a testament to Rococo architecture. Designed by the esteemed architect Engelbert Baets, a protégé and nephew of Jan Pieter van Baurscheit de Jonge, the building showcases the intricate artistry of the 18th century. Baets, born in 1719, was renowned for his contributions to Antwerp's architectural landscape, including notable projects like the Bisschoppelijk Paleis and the Begijnhofkerk Sint-Margaretha in Lier. His work on Paardenmarkt 68 reflects his commitment to elegance and structural integrity.

The building's storied past includes its acquisition in 1849 by Edouard Kums, a sail manufacturer and art collector. Kums transformed the residence into the Museum Kums, opening its doors to the public from 1891 to 1897, and enriching Antwerp's cultural tapestry. Over the years, Paardenmarkt 68 has served various roles, from a commercial space to a bank, and even as a Spanish cultural center, each chapter adding to its rich narrative.

The Present Revival

In recent years, the significance of Paardenmarkt 68 has been recognized by Vanbelle Law Boutique and VB Alliance. Understanding the building's historical and cultural value, these entities have embarked on a mission to restore and repurpose the space, ensuring its legacy endures. Their vision is to blend the classical architectural elements with contemporary design, creating a space that honors its past while serving modern functions.

This initiative aligns with the broader efforts to preserve Antwerp's heritage, as seen in projects like the Molotov private club. Designed by Glenn Sestig Architects, Molotov was celebrated as the best private club in the world by Wallpaper* magazine in 2006. Such endeavors highlight the city's commitment to maintaining its historical structures' essence while adapting them for contemporary use.

Looking Ahead

The future of Paardenmarkt 68 is poised to be as dynamic as its past. With the guidance of Vanbelle Law Boutique and the collaborative network of VB Alliance, plans are underway to transform the building into a hub for cultural and professional events. This includes art exhibitions, legal seminars, and networking events that pay homage to the building's historical significance while fostering a space for innovation and collaboration.

By intertwining the expertise of legal professionals, architects, and cultural curators, Paardenmarkt 68 is set to become a beacon of Antwerp's dedication to preserving its heritage while embracing the future. This harmonious blend of past, present, and future ensures that the legacy of Paardenmarkt 68 will continue to inspire generations to come.
